New Braunfels
(Braunfels means "brown rock", but was named after Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels)
Water
One New Braunfels greatest draws is the water. The worlds smallest river, the Comal, and the Guadalupe meet in New Braunfels.
The Guadalupe is famous for its rapids and spring fed clear waters and is popular with tubers. The city park, Landa Park, is popular with paddle boats, swimming, boating and fishing. For help with your water expedition, Hill Country Visitor has a complete list of River Outfitters
Wurstfest
One of my favorite annual events in the Hill Country is Wurstfest, a 10 Day Sausage Festival in early November. (October 29 - November 7, 2004) Go plently hungry and "salute the best of the wurst". Enjoy the traditional German bands (think "oompah") and dancing groups. Buy a crazy kooky hat or lederhosen and do the chicken dance with the locals. Eat sausages of every description and a variety of victuals "on-a-stick".. If you plan on drinking (and there's plenty) do plan on bringing a designated driver, or consider a bed and breakfast.

Truly out in the middle of nowhere is this fun-filled country gem. If you like burgers and beer, this the place for you. Complete with the obligatory neon beer signs, the Freiheit Country Store's greatest draw is a radio show called "Humble Time"
Hootin' & hollerin' is grately appreciated as acts take the stage and record (with audience in background) an original country music radio show.
Despite its location (do download a map!), don't be surprised if you see big name country acts or songwriters. On the day that we went, a Grammy award winning songwriter was whoopin' it up with the rest of us.
Check their site for schedules. These live recorded performances are well worth the trip.
